Celebrating Dedication: Rebekah Cheney

Across the Enumclaw School District educators exceed students’ and families’ expectations daily, leaving a lasting impact. At Enumclaw Middle School, one such educator stands out: Rebekah Cheney, whose Food Science class has become a beacon of learning and inspiration for students.

In Ms. Cheney’s Food Science classroom, something magical happens. It's not just about mastering recipes; it's about understanding the science behind the ingredients, the art of flavor combinations, and the impact of nutrition on overall health. But what truly sets Cheney apart is her ability to foster an environment where respect and engagement flourish.

"Ms. Cheney is a great teacher. The way she connects with students and is teaching us things we already use outside of school is awesome," said Tyler Aaby, a 7th-grade student who embodies the enthusiasm echoing through the classroom.

It's common to find students like 8th-grader Trajan McIntosh eager to enroll in Cheney's class. "I tried to take Food Science last year but it was full. I’m glad I get to be here now! My sister goes to culinary school and that’s what prompted me to take this class. I get to make cookies and meals at home and my parents love it! I’m really proud to be able to do that," Trajan reflected the excitement shared by many Food Science students.

Behind the scenes, Cheney's dedication is what shines brightest. "Teaching a class like this is a lot of work! Last night I spent two hours shopping and prepping items for this one lesson alone," she remarked. “All but one of my 17 years of teaching have been at Enumclaw Middle School. The creative culture, passion for learning, genuine care for students, and colleagues who are like family have kept me at EMS all these years.”

In Ms. Cheney’s classroom, learning extends far beyond the confines of textbooks. It's a journey of discovery, empowerment, and culinary creativity. As students explore the intricacies of food science, they also cultivate essential life skills, from teamwork and problem-solving to understanding how food nourishes the body, all under the guidance of a remarkable teacher.
